The Crazy Challenge
Feb. 28th, 2011 01:14 pmOver on Twitter, famed crank Geordie Tait posted a challenge:
Rank in order of insanity, most insane to least insane: Cruise, Phoenix, Gibson, Nicholson, Sheen, Bale, Seagal.
Tough call - well, not really. Charlie Sheen (#1), having actually shot someone, is clearly at the top of the bugfuck category, falling only slightly below sadly-out-of-the-running-and-never-an-ac tor William Burroughs. Plus, if we grade harder for current events, he went even crazier today.
After that, Mel Gibson (#2). His rants are scary, and though I think some portion of the crazy-spin is his ex-wife releasing the tapes in the most damning order, dude is still nuts - especially when you consider his Holocaust-denying dad and his love of torture.
Then we sort of drift down into the "mostly harmless" category; Tom Cruise (#3) is a whacko in his personal life, and the blind items suggest a strong amount of strongly-denied gayness, but I don't think he's going to hurt anyone. Even Katie Holmes appears to be well-compensated for her time. But he's still crazy.
Joaquin Phoenix (#4) is just a nutty attention whore. He wants to be Andy Kaufman, but doesn't have the chops to entertain as consistently. Steven Seagal (#5) has bought into his own hype; maybe he is dangerous, but I don't follow him closely enough to really know what the hell he's doing in his personal life, and neither does anyone else, really.
Then we're in the "not crazy" territory. Christian Bale (#6) sinks really deep into his work, and takes it way too seriously (or maybe not, depending on how you value his career), but he appears to be functional in other areas of his life. Jack Nicholson (#7) might have been crazy at one point, but now he's just sort of a sad old man, lamenting his inability to connect with women outside of sex.
So what do you think? What's the order? Again:
Tom Cruise
Joaquin Phoenix
Mel Gibson
Jack Nicholson
Charlie Sheen
Christian Bale
Steven Seagal

5 Nicholson
6 Phoenix
7 Bale
I mean. The top of the table is a fungible thing; I thought seriously about putting those three in a circular three-way tie. (Cruise is nuttier than Gibson, Gibson is nuttier than Sheen, Sheen is nuttier than Cruise.) Seagal could go either way. The others aren't bonkers, they're just frustrating combinations of dickish and very shrewd.
Nuttiness rating

Uncertain of the others. Notwithstanding the mock doc Joaquin Phoenix I read suffers from Panic disorder, social anxiety. He said of himself he's painfully shy. He was hospitalized twice for depression.
