*thoughtful* I've spent a lot of my life being told that I don't exist, and not just by not getting to see anyone like me. Feminists and US-style conservatives mostly agree on what the rest of us call gender essentialism, and they call "the truth". Women are this, and men are that. Any woman inately knows what's "feminine" - it's the way she naturally acts - so I can't possibly keep falling over landmines where I fail to act in gender appropriate ways - I must be misbehaving on purpose. Never mind that the things I supposedly did "naturally" in the 1950s and early 1960s are rather different from the things girls supposedly do "naturally" in 2017.

I gravitate to stories with females doing things that are currently male assigned, and to a lesser extent those doing things that were male assigned in my past. But mostly I just identify with the character(s) who act like I might, and those are, in the main, male. And I pretty much don't even look for stories with people whose daily experience contradicts gender essentialism - they are going to be mushy stories about emotions, and while as a female assigned person I must be all about emotions - I actually find a little emotional angst goes a long long way with me.

Which is a long roundabout way of saying "it depends". People are currently used to having a gay character in every story, so this may matter to those who identify that way. But gay exclusion may also be something they are totally used to, to the point where while being non-excluded (intelligently) is a bonus, they don't really miss it.

Personally, I don't think a "token" gay character would matter all that much to me. But I'm not a teen trying to figure out where I fit in the world. And I don't identify as gay. (Queer yes; gay no.) So I can hardly claim real insight.
